So you’ve always wanted the front lawn to make your neighbors green with envy. But how can you get and maintain such a lawn in the volatile Texas weather?
6 Tips for a Greener, Healthier Lawn
Keep your lawn fresh and green all year long with these tips from our Purple Care Pros!
1. Deepen Roots
Don’t overcut or overwater your lawn, and you’ll be rewarded with greener grass! Well-maintained grass builds deeper roots that can absorb more water and is more resilient.
2. Aerate Your Lawn
Aeration — the process of perforating the soil with small holes — allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch. Just like having deeply rooted roots is essential to the health of your lawn, aerating your lawn makes it easier for water, nutrients, sunlight, and air to reach the roots.
3. Maintain Height
Mowing too often and cutting the grass too short can both negatively impact the health of your lawn. But what’s the best height for good grass health? Typically, aim to keep grass between 2 to 2.5 inches. The easiest way to keep to this is to follow the one-third rule: never cut off more than one-third of the blade during one mowing session.
4. Choose The Right Grass
Just like all plants, certain kinds of grass do better in different climates. Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue do best in cool climate zones, but warm-season grasses, like Bermuda grass or Zoysia grass, flourish in warmer, southern climates.
Why does grass matter? The EPA estimates that 50 percent of water used for landscaping is wasted. Watering at the wrong time of day and trying to keep the wrong species of grass in a climate it isn’t suited for can contribute to water waste.
5. Know When To Water
When do you water your lawn? Switch to watering early in the morning — this allows water to soak in before heat from the sun causes evaporation. Less evaporation means deeper hydration.
You should also only water once or twice per week, rather than daily. Daily watering can make grass weak. Plus, weeds and moss love a damp habitat. Too much water can leave your lawn more susceptible to diseases such as brown patch. Keep an eye out for these signs that your grass needs water:
- Footprints that remain visible for more than 30 minutes
- A blue, gray, or purple tint to the grass
6. Maintain Your Tools
A dull mower blade can actually harm your grass! Dull blades tend to shred or tear blades of grass instead of cutting them cleanly. Torn grass doesn’t grow as healthily and can even turn brown. Keeping blades sharp and varying your mowing pattern keeps your lawn looking great and encourages growth, and can prevent the soil from becoming compacted.
