1. Rejuvenate Your Lawn

Fairly early in the growing season, your lawn will roar back to life again. However, it can only do this if it is in good health and ready to take advantage of the better conditions. Therefore, the early days of spring are the best time to get out and rejuvenate your lawn with a few helpful treatments and maintenance procedures. First, pick up a bag of seed or grass patching mix and a simple hand tiller. Go to any bald or thin spots you may have on your lawn and till the soil in that area to loosen it. Then cover the area with a good amount of patch mix or seed and then coat it with a thin layer of topsoil. Once you start to water your lawn again, make sure this area gets a good amount of water every single day for several weeks. By roughly mid-spring, these previously-dead areas should be packed with thick, vibrant grass that gives your yard a healthy look.

2. Install a Raised Garden Bed

Raised garden beds give you the ability to grow a variety of flowers, shrubs, or even vegetables and herbs, all while separating them from the tough clay soil in the ground. Raised garden beds can be purchased in kit form for an easy experience, however, those who have even basic handy skills can build a garden bed with standard materials that can be picked up from pretty much any home improvement warehouse store.

When filling a raised bed, be sure to use nutrient-rich soil that is specifically designed for raised beds. Different types of soils have different nutrient mixtures, and these mixtures have different intended purposes. Likewise, make sure you have an adequate plan to water your new garden bed or even consider hooking it to your sprinklers to create a drip system.

3. Install Better Garden Edging

One of the easiest ways to give your yard a makeover is to simply place defined boundaries between flowerbeds or planters and other outdoor features. Without proper edging, these areas can run into one another, giving an overall untidy look (especially if grass starts to intrude into your flower bed and weeds start to overgrow the area). Simply placing a defined boundary with edging material will not only make maintenance of these areas easier, but it will also give your property a well-groomed and defined look that helps your garden beds and your lawn both stand out. Edging comes in a variety of styles, colors, and materials, and different materials carry different price tags so there is sure to be a type of edging for any budget.

4. Install Tasteful Outdoor Lighting

Your yard doesn’t have to limit its beauty to only daytime hours—tasteful lighting on some of your landscape’s key features can accentuate its beauty and give you a whole new way of enjoying it when the sun goes down. Outdoor lighting has dropped tremendously in price over the last 10 years or so, and now energy-efficient LEDs come in smaller, safer, more affordable, and easier-to-install packages that make outdoor accent lighting easy.

Here are just a few ideas for what to light on your property:

  • Line a walkway with solar-charged path lights that automatically turn on at night (these are ideal for anybody, as they require no wiring or electrical installation whatsoever).
  • Highlight a tree with small uplighting fixtures that turn on with your exterior lights.
  • Place a series of small spots at ground level around flower beds to show off greenery (be sure these lights do turn off, however—many plants need a dark nighttime cycle in order to remain healthy).
