Your yard is a living, breathing eco-system that acts as an extension to your home. Many memories are made here, from family barbecues to birthdays to pools days. With proper care, it can be the perfect oasis for you and your loved ones. On the other hand, a lack of proper landscaping can leave it looking like an eyesore.
At Purple Care, we have seen just about every landscaping mistake made in our nearly 30 years of service. Read on to learn more about some of the most common landscaping mistakes we have seen over the years and how to avoid them.
1. Planting Too Close To The House
Placing trees and shrubs too close to the house is a big mistake. Overgrown trees can come into contact with and disturb roofing materials, potentially damaging your roof. Also, shrubs near the home can damage the foundation as roots continue to grow.
Not to mention, planting trees and shrubs right next to your home makes it much easier for pests to get inside! As pest control experts, we are all too familiar with the countless rodents, spiders, and other critters that travel from trees to homes.
2. Forgetting To Research Plants
We all wish that we could just plant whatever we want to in our yard. Unfortunately, failing to take into consideration the needs of the plants you select can result in a disaster. Depending on your climate and the specific care instructions that come with each plant, you might end up with a yard of dead plants if you choose incorrectly!
Lucky for you, North Texas is one of the best places to have a diverse landscape. Thanks to our mid- to upper temperatures, we are able to grow plenty of different plants. However, our harsh, hot summers do require us to select some hardier plants.
Some of the best plants and trees for North Texas landscapes include:
- Powis Castle
- Crapemyrtle tree
- Bee Balm
- Smoke tree
- Texas Bird of Paradise
- Chaste tree
- Black-eyed Susan
- Japanese Maple tree
- Copper Canyon Daisy
- Fall Aster
- Gregg’s Mist Flower
- Dwarf Mexican Brush Sage
- White Rain Lily
3. Including Too Many Tchotchkes
A few ornamental items can really help to enhance your yard. Too many tchotchkes, however, can overwhelm your landscape and even detract from it. If you choose to use decorations in your landscape, we recommend sticking to just a few and making sure they are spread throughout the yard. Or, you could even choose one item to create a focal point in your landscape.
4. Keeping The Lawn Too Short
While extra-short golf course grass looks nice, it is not the way to go. Mowing your lawn too often and keeping grass too short can prevent grass from performing photosynthesis, hinder roots from growing properly, and damage exposed soil. To ensure your lawn is able to absorb nutrients and stay healthy, it is best to keep your grass no less than 2.5-3 inches in height.
5. Putting Plants In The Wrong Spot
Each plant has very specific needs based on watering and sunlight. Placing a plant somewhere just because it looks good in that spot is a big mistake that could end up costing you that plant. Instead, be careful to take the needs of the plant into consideration when finding the perfect spot for it in your landscape.
6. Not Hiring Professional Landscapers
