Possessing an accurate measurement of a lawn’s surface area is often an essential step for any number of landscaping projects.
From estimating irrigation and watering costs to being able to determine the volume of materials needed for a landscaping renovation or upgrade, learning how to measure a yard is never a concern that property owners should leave to chance.
The following four examples serve to highlight some of the most common and useful methods that homeowners may use in order to determine the size and dimensions of their lawn.
1. Basic Techniques To Determine Surface Area
Determining how to measure a yard may be as simple as multiplying length times width.
This method is often all that is needed for square and rectangular-shaped lawns as well as for property owners who may only require a rough estimate rather than an exact measurement.
Measurements are typically taken using only the most basic tools and techniques, such as ropes, measuring tapes or even pacing out the distance.
Online services that provide satellite imaging of a lawn and property may also be useful when it comes the time to measure your garden or yard.
2. Creating Circular Partitions
Attempting to measure a landscape circle is also a simple undertaking, one that requires very little additional effort.
Planting a stake at the center of an area and then attaching a string or rope to it will allow home and property owners to create circular and semicircular partitions of varying sizes.
Diagramming or sketching the layout and dimensions of a lawn makes it easier to experiment with different shapes and sizes which can then be created to scale very quickly and easily.
Being able to measure a landscape circle quickly and accurately may come in handy during any number of projects and upgrades.
3. Calculating Slope And Gradient
While the slope of a lawn may be just as critical as other measurements, it is also a concern that frequently goes overlooked.
Slope measurements are typically taken by placing stakes at both the highest and lowest point of a lawn and at 8-foot intervals between the two.
Once the stakes are in place, a string is tied to the bottom of the top-most stake at ground-level. The string is then measured against a carpenter’s level before being attached to the nearest stake and the process is repeated until the lowest stake is reached.
The length of the string is then measured, as well as its height at each attachment point along the stakes, and the final combined height is then divided by the length.
4. Measuring Irregular Areas
Irregular shaped lawns or partitions often pose a greater challenge when it comes to accurate measurement.
A popular method that may be used to measure your garden or landscaping addition is to divide the lawn into smaller square or rectangular areas in order to facilitate measurement.
This method may not always be the most accurate way of taking measurements but it may prove to be the easiest, especially when only a rough estimate of the area may be required.
Creating the Perfect Lawn
Knowing the dimensions of a lawn, garden or landscaped area is often essential when it comes to renovations, additions and upgrade projects on your landscape design.
Knowing the precise dimensions of your lawn and garden can also come in handy when it comes to purchasing landscaping materials or calculating the cost of irrigation or maintenance.
A few household tools and a handful of basic techniques are all that is typically needed in order to measure any yard.
