The Top 10 Ways to Keep Cockroaches Off of Your Property
- Clean Your Home Regularly: Proper cleaning and sanitizing is probably the most important thing you can do to keep cockroaches away. Remember to always wipe up spills right away, disinfect surfaces frequently, and don’t forget to sweep up any crumbs and debris on the floor. This cleaning routine is especially important in the kitchen, which brings us to…
- Put Away Food Properly: Leaving food out is pretty much an invitation for cockroaches to enter your home. Never let leftovers sit out overnight and don’t allow dirty dishes to pile up in the sink. You should also store fruits and vegetables, as they will attract cockroaches and other insects as soon as they start to rot. When you put food in your fridge, make sure it is stored in airtight containers. Throw away expired food promptly and if you keep snacks in your cupboards, make sure that the packages are sealed properly.
- Limit Moisture: In addition to food, cockroaches are often drawn to areas with an available water source. That means you should always eliminate standing water in your kitchen, keeping your sink as dry as possible and putting away your animals’ food and water dishes nightly. You should also clean your bathroom and try to limit excess moisture in this space, too, as too much moisture can lead to mold growth—a thing that cockroaches thrive on.
- Don’t Forget to Take Out the Trash: Cockroaches love filth, so you should always take out the garbage regularly and make sure there is a tight lid on your trash can.
- Try to Keep Food in the Kitchen: While it is common to snack while sitting on the couch, it is best to limit where you take food in your house, as the more places you spread crumbs, the more places cockroaches are likely to flock to. At the very least, do not keep food in your living room or bedroom, and try to keep the areas you eat as clean as possible.
- Vacuum Throughout the House: You are probably already vacuuming your carpet regularly, but to keep away cockroaches, it is a good idea to vacuum all across your household. Roaches feed at night, so try to vacuum in the kitchen during the evening. This will not only help to pick up crumbs and debris, it will also help you get rid of cockroach feces, body parts, and egg sacs, all of which contain pheromones that can attract more roaches to your home.
- Seal Up Entry Points as Much as Possible: We know that cockroaches can fit into extremely small spaces, so completely cutting off entry points may be unrealistic. However, by sealing up cracks and patching up holes as much as possible, you may be able to discourage these insects from entering, if not completely, than at least in great quantities.
- Declutter Where You Can: Again, cockroaches love fitting into small, dark spaces, so don’t let items pile up, especially in your basement, attic, crawlspace, or garage. The last thing you want is to pick up a box and find out it is full of cockroaches, speaking of which—
- Limit Materials for Roach Shelter: Roaches often make shelter out of discarded cardboard and paper, meaning you should recycle these materials as much as possible. Also, try not to leave old boxes lying around, especially if they are filled with magazines or other paper items.
